Grayskies an Introduction

Writer's picture: dani graydani gray

Hi... I'm new here.

Honestly the idea of setting up a website scared me... it still does. Of all the things I can pick up, the webs is not one of them. Luckily, I have good friends to encourage me.

For those who dont know me, I have always been something of a maker or creative. My entire life I have been invested in making something. As a kid there was coloring, book making (zines), making my own clothes (with staples!).... I tried anything. As I got older I added writing and a bit of painting. I think the earliest passion I really dove into was collage. I have memories of in my early teens of my parents allowing me to sand down the refridge and collage the front.

In my late 20's my life changed dramatically, in a rapid succession of huge and devastating events. I ended up in the PNW, living with a life long friend. On the way, I picked up a painting that their parents insisted we needed to have in our apartment.

We both hated the painting.

One afternoon, I went to the nearest art store, bought some gesso and paints... and my world changed.

Creating art became more than just a hobby, it became my focus.

The First
The First

I began consuming any art related educational materials I could find; Skillshare, Youtube, workshops, books, anything. For years I worked on painting after painting, finding the things I loved, that made a painting mine.

Its been a decade of creating and selling my art. I believe with all of my soul that art saved my life. That art saves. It has the unique power to make us think differently about life, events, and people.

I have a complicated relationship with traditional art education.... which I will detail in other posts, but to cut to the quick of it- you dont need it. If you have even the slightest drive to make things- do it. Start now. Make the things you want to make; no, not everyone will like it- but those that do not resonate with your art, are not your audience. Art is for everyone, but not all art speaks to all people. That is part of its magic.

That's all for now.

Dani xx

The Tortured Artist and Other Lies.

We all know the age old 'tortured artist' stereotype... that a creative that is suffering will be able to get in touch with their misery...
